The clinical fellowship in glaucoma is a one-year fellowship designed to provide comprehensive subspecialty training in glaucoma diagnosis, management, and surgery. The objectives of the program are to enhance the clinical subspecialty skills of the post-residency graduate in the medical and surgical management of glaucoma and to provide experience in clinical or basic glaucoma research.
The one year program is under the preceptorship of Drs. George Cioffi, Lama Al–Aswad, Dana Blumberg and Max Forbes at the Edward S. Harkness Eye Institute, Department of Ophthalmology.
One fellow is selected annually through the fellowship matching program. The fellow assists in the medical and surgical care of the attendings’ private patients, as well as participating fully in the care of glaucoma clinic patients at the Harkness Eye Institute. The fellow will be involved in and perform a wide variety of glaucoma and anterior segment surgical procedures throughout the year. In addition, the fellow is responsible for participating in teaching activities and supervising the resident laser clinics. The fellow is expected to carry out at least one research project leading to publication and to present his/her research findings at local/ regional and national conferences and meetings.

Research opportunities are available in both clinical and basic science areas at Columbia. Potential projects include clinical outcome trials in glaucoma surgery, trials of new medical therapies, and basic science research involving neuroprotection and optic nerve degeneration. Affiliated faculty preceptors are also available.
The candidate is required to have completed residency training in ophthalmology. He or she must also have a New York Medical License prior to matriculation into the program. The training period commences on July 1 and concludes on June 30 of the following year; two positions per year are offered.
