Clinical Trials

The experienced team of clinician scientists at the Clinical Research Center of the Department of Ophthalmology, Columbia University, is currently running a multitude of industry sponsored and investigator initiated clinical research trials. These prospective studies encompass all subspecialties of ophthalmology, such as, vitreo-retinal and macular diseases, corneal pathologies and different types of glaucoma. They encompass different aspects of disease management such as, intensive screening programs, genetic studies, exploration of novel diagnostic modalities and, ultimately, investigation of experimental treatments or, expansion of indications for existing therapeutic options.

The team of researchers is highly dedicated to ensure rigorous adherence to good clinical practices in implementing these protocols, because the safety of study patients is of paramount importance. Naturally, the team rejoices every time a certain diagnostic method or therapeutic option proves to be safe and effective and passes the test of time long after it receives FDA approval.

The principal investigators, co-investigators and their respective study coordinators are available around the clock to answer every question potential patients or their family members might have on every aspect of a given clinical trial. If a certain study is not suitable for a specific patient, other options are explored to be able to offer maximum assistance with his illness. The ophthalmologists fully understand how precious the gift of sight is and how much time and energy patients dedicate to their efforts to ameliorate or preserve their existing vision, or, at least, slow down the inevitable progression of their vision loss.

We would be more than happy to assist you in any way we can with all your questions or concerns about a specific clinical trial. We are glad that you found our website and hope to facilitate your research process that has led you to believe that, a certain trial posted in this site, might be the right one for you to take part in. If you live in a distant area, we would try to locate a principal investigator clinician nearby you, so that you may benefit from the proposed treatment.

We hope you find an answer for your eye problem in the actively enrolling clinical trials listed below. Our coordinators would gladly provide you with more information on the eligibility criteria, potential side effects by analyzing the risk-benefit profile, study procedures' schedule and logistics ad you may receive this information in your preferred form of communication, i.e., over the telephone, via fax or email. You may also receive copies of the informed consent forms that you may examine with your family members to better absorb the information given and prepare for the consultation session.
